September has been an unforgettable month at Koru Camp! Inspired by the powerful launch of ‘Rhino Man’ in June, we proudly partnered with Global Conservation Corps and Connected Planet Foundation to host two exclusive screenings in Johannesburg and London. These evenings were filled with electric energy—delicious plant-based canapés, wines, stunning art displays, moving speeches, and even a lively raffle—all united by a collective passion for conservation.

Koru Camp began as an idea: a belief that local communities needed a dedicated venue within the Greater Kruger where they could experience the incredible nature on their doorstep. Since then, especially over the past 12 months, the camp has undergone a whirlwind of growth and transformation. Week after week, our tents are filled with excited young learners, aspiring conservationists, and grateful Gogos. Balancing our ethos of accessibility with the challenge of long-term sustainability, the time was right to add another layer of expertise to the talented Koru team.
Rhino Man’s Legacy: Shaping Young Conservationists at Koru Camp
Hand-picked for their love of nature and dreams of a career in conservation, 14 teenage girls arrived at Koru Camp last month as part of the Global Conservation Corps’ Future Rangers Program. Bursting with smiles and excitement for their first adventure in the wild, the girls quickly settled into their tents and eagerly joined our guide and environmental educator, Bongani, for an engaging lesson on ecology.

Nature’s Apprentice: Melody’s Inspirational Journey into Guiding at Koru Camp
Melody’s journey from a local community near Kruger National Park to a budding conservationist is awe-inspiring. Sponsored by Wild Shots Outreach, she overcame obstacles to become an Apprentice Guide at Koru Camp. Her story showcases the power of passion and determination in pursuing a dream career in nature conservation.
Conservation, community and the art of photography
Koru Camp was delighted to host Wild Shots Outreach for their 5-day photography course in December 2023. Alongside 8 eager students, the team conducted daily lessons in the mechanics and modes of a camera as well as the use of light, framing, depth of field and shutter speed to create the perfect picture. Each morning and afternoon, they ventured out on game drives with guide Joel to put their skills into practice and, thanks to Wild Shots leaders Rifumo and Bright, the students could analyse their best shots and learn a little about what it takes to become a professional photographer.

Plant powered cooking at Koru
Run by our modest and kind-hearted chef, Tinyiko, the Koru Camp kitchen is not only a source of delicious, home-cooked meals but it is also doing its part for conservation with its meat-conscious ethos. By reducing the amount of meat consumed during our camps, we are able to lower our carbon footprint and reduce our impact towards climate change. Not only that, eating less meat has also been shown to save water, reduce deforestation and protect biodiversity.
