Life at koru

Life at Koru Camp revolves around nature. From the sunrise announcing the beginning of the day to sharing stories under the stars at night, each moment is shaped by the environment around us. As we strive to foster a deeper understanding for nature, we prioritise spending time away from a classroom and immersed in the outdoors. Morning and afternoon educational safaris form the centrepiece of our programme, supported by in-camp lessons, interactive games and thought-provoking activities.

DINING AT KORU

Good nutrition is the foundation of good health and plays an important role in effective learning. We serve three wholesome, vegetarian meals a day in our spacious, open dining area. Prepared using locally sourced ingredients, mealtimes often become one of the highlights of a stay at Koru.

Vegetarian diets can reduce our carbon footprint, land use, and water use by roughly one third compared to omnivorous diets. We believe that delicious food can be nutritious, satisfying, and lighter on the planet.

“The food we had was so delicious.”

“I didn’t know that meals without meat can be so nice.”

SLEEPING AT KORU

Accommodation at Koru Camp is simple, comfortable, and a memorable part of the experience. Our canvas tents are set on raised platforms and sheltered under a roof, offering protection from the elements while still allowing the sounds and scents of the bush to filter through – inviting a chorus of morning whispers as everyone compares which animals they heard overnight!

Volunteers joining through our EcoTraining programme stay in one of our spacious, en-suite tents within the staff area. These may also be used by visiting staff or facilitators, subject to availability and an additional fee.

12 canvas dome tents (sleeping up to 24 guests)

Two single beds per tent with blankets and pillows

Separate male and female shower blocks with hot water

It was my first time sleeping in a tent and at first I was scared but by the end I really enjoyed being outdoors.”

– Participant, Hlokomela
